Walmart Grocery Pickup: A Review

I recently pulled the trigger and tried Walmart Grocery Pickup for the first time. In general, I’m a HUGE fan. When you travel an hour each way, two times per week for gymnastics and Taekwondo for your kids, you’re not super excited about having to either shop late at night with the kids on a school night, or making a third trip in the week to pick up groceries. Enter Walmart Grocery Pickup.

I’ve tried other grocery pick up services that have worked fine for me, however, I still have those items I have to pick up from Walmart that I’m not able to get at the grocery store. For those that may be wondering, our closest Target is nearly 2 hours away, so that’s not exactly an option. So, I either have to make an extra stop at Walmart or order online and hope they have what I need online. Or, I use the Walmart Grocery Pickup and save myself TONS of time! Yes, I think I’ll go with that option. An extra perk for me, Walmart is right next to my son’s Taekwondo school, so I can drop him off, run to grab the groceries and be back in plenty of time before his class is over and we have to head across town to his sister’s gymnastics.

How does Walmart Grocery Pickup Work?

If you don’t already have a Walmart.com account, you will want to set one up. Once set up, log in and click the Grocery icon at the top. You will then be prompted to choose your store location before you actually begin shopping. When you shop you can use the search feature to find exact items (this is my preferred method), or browse specific categories. Add your items to your cart and proceed to checkout. This is when you will choose your preferred pickup day and time slot (or see Pro Tip 1 and do that step first), and you can choose if you would like any items to be substituted if they happen to be out of an item you ordered. If I am not picky about the specific item I will usually choose substitution, but if I know I want an exact item I will check the box for no substitution. When the associate brings your order out, they will review any substitutions made, and you will have the option at that time to keep the substitution or decline.

Pro Tip 1: Choose your desired time slot for pick up BEFORE you begin shopping. This will save you lots of headache if your preferred day and time happen to be unavailable and you need to switch up your plans. I may know this from experience.

Pro Tip 2: Download the Walmart Grocery App. Once your order is ready for pickup, you can check in on the app while on your way to the store, and the associate can see how far away you are in order to have your order pulled and ready upon arrival. I understand this may freak some people out, however, not having to wait long once I arrive is totally worth it to me. Some people like to place their grocery orders directly from the app as well.

Now, let’s take a look at some pros and cons of Walmart Grocery Pickup vs the traditional shopping in store.

Pros:

  • I can shop from my couch
  • It saves lots of time I would otherwise have to spend in the store
  • I stick to my list because I’m not tempted by other items I see in the aisles
  • Because of the above mentioned, I save money!
  • No more dragging the kiddos through the store (which makes the entire process 4x slower)
  • Wide variety of options to choose from
  • If the store is out of an item ordered, and you don’t want a substitute the store associate chose, the item will be removed from your order, and you will not be charged for that item
  • If the store is out of an item ordered, and the substitute costs more than the original item, you will only be charged the amount of the original item on your order

Cons:

  • Not everything in the store is available to order via grocery pickup
  • If an item you order is not available, you will not know until shortly before the time slot you chose to pick up your order. This may be an issue if the store is missing a key ingredient you were needing and the substitute is not what you were wanting
  • On occasion, the day and time you prefer to pick up your groceries may not be available if those slots were already filled by other orders

All in all, for me the pros definitely out way the cons. If you have never tried Walmart Grocery Pickup, you at least need to give it a try and see what you think for yourself. Use my link HERE and get $10 off your first order! You get $10 off, and I get $10 off. I’d say that’s a win win! Now, let me know if you’ve every used Walmart Grocery Pickup and what you like (or don’t like) about it, or let me know what you’re most looking forward to when you do use it!

    1. Everyone should at least give it a try. You won’t know unless you try! And if it’s not for you, at least you saved $10 off your order! Ha! 🙂

  1. Definitely see advantages to using the service. I just need to see if I can get organized enough to make it work. With Glenn doing most of our cooking, shopping requires some coordination… Thanks for the tips!

  2. Ive never tried Walmart Pickup service before – good to hear you had such a great experience! I had tried another stores a few time and was less than impressed… maybe Walmart will be better!

    1. You should at least give it a try and see. Use my link and at least you could get $10 off your order, so that’s a plus! Of course I can’t speak for every Walmart as I’ve only tried my local one.

  3. When my hubby deployed, I started using Walmart pickup. I would drop my daughter off to dance. Then pick up our household items. Loved it!

    1. I use it almost every time I need groceries now. I live an hour from Walmart, and it takes FOREVER to go to town and actually do the shopping. I go to town anyway for my daughter’s gymnastics, so I pick them up while she is at team practice. Works great for my family.
