The Best Puppy Chow Recipe

Puppy Chow, Muddy Buddies, monkey munch, muddy munch, reindeer chow. Whatever you prefer to call it, many of us know that little square of peanut butter and chocolate goodness. We grew up calling it puppy chow, so I can’t get away from it. There are a lot of recipes out there, but what I’m about to share with you is the very best puppy chow recipe you’ll find.

This puppy chow recipe comes from my dear childhood friend, Rebekah Youngblood. She knows how to make it right, and since we don’t live near each other anymore, she was kind enough to share it with me and to let me share it with you! Anytime we had a school party or any type of get together growing up it was always “Bekki’s bringing her puppy chow”.

So why is this the best puppy chow recipe ever? Why is this one better than any others? Well, it has just the right amount of EVERYTHING! I’ve tried several other recipes out there, and they just don’t have enough of all the good stuff on them. They’re dry and not too flavorful. With this recipe, every handful will be the perfect handful.

A Few Tips

Here’s just a few tips to help you get started so you make sure this is the best puppy chow recipe ever.

  • For best results, use Crispix cereal. It has slightly larger holes which allows for the chocolate and peanut butter to seep in better
  • Use a large plastic storage container with lid or a large zipper bag for mixing
  • The cooking time takes a total of just 1 1/2 minutes in my microwave, so make sure not to over cook or the chocolate will seize
  • Don’t put all powdered sugar in at once. Add half the amount, shake, and then check to see if it’s coated evenly. If not, my friend Rebekah says “repeat until all cereal is coated and your whole kitchen is sufficiently covered in powered sugar”!
  • If using a plastic storage container, do be careful when removing the lid after adding the powered sugar as it can tend to fly everywhere if you’re not careful
  • Always make sure to eat with friends! 🙂

Sweet bites of chocolate and peanut butter coated cereal. Perfect for any party or get together.
Prep Time 15 minutes
Servings: 16 people
Course: Dessert, Snack
Cuisine: American

Ingredients

  • 8 cups Crispix cereal (or Chex)
  • 1 stick Butter
  • 1 cup Peanut butter (chunky or creamy)
  • 1 cup Semi sweet chocolate chips
  • 2-4 cups Powdered sugar

Method

  1. Place butter, chocolate and peanut butter in a microwave safe bowl and microwave for 30 seconds. Stir. Continue microwaving in 30 second increments until melted.
  2. Put cereal in plastic container or zipper bag. Pour chocolate mixture over cereal and stir gently.
  3. Sprinkle 2 cups powdered sugar over cereal. Cover with plastic lid or zip bag and shake. Shaking is better than stirring at this point as you won't crush as much cereal.
  4. Open container. If powdered sugar is dissolving, add a little more powdered sugar and shake again. Repeat until desired amount of powdered sugar.

    1. To be honest, my husband and I ate almost the entire batch ourselves the last time we made it! Not so good on the health, but I sure tasted so good! 🙂

    1. I hadn’t either. My first try with a different recipe was a huge disappointment, but this recipe was perfection, just as I remembered it from years ago.

    1. LOL. Yep, that’s where it got it’s name because it kind of looks like actual puppy chow. Maybe I should update it and add a puppy approved version!

  1. This is a special tradition at our house twice a year when our church holds a big conference that we watch online. I’ll have to try Crispix next time!
