I recently did a month long decluttering challenge with Allie Casazza and Declutter Like a Mother. And let me tell you, it was phenomenal and just what I needed that I didn’t even know I needed! This is a free challenge that she does every year in January, so if you missed it this time around, you can jump next time around. The challenge was decluttering your home for 30 minutes per day for 30 days. This challenge was perfect for me because my life is crazy busy. Can anyone relate? Just from doing this challenge, my kitchen is under control, and it has been clean every night except for one in the past three weeks! I don’t know about you, but that’s definitely a win for me.

So, you may be saying “that’s nice for you, but how do I get started decluttering my home?” Well, just like exercise or healthy eating, it all comes down to this… you just have to start. You have to make a decision and then do it. I understand that when it comes to decluttering, or any of these things mentioned really, the OVERWHELM can take over, and it seems impossible to start. So how do you get from making the decision to taking action?

Here are just a few tips to help you get started on your decluttering journey:
Start in a space that takes up the most of your time (kitchen or clothes)
Start in a space that doesn’t have a lot of sentimental items that will make it hard for you to declutter
Choose one room and work on it until it is finished (whether that takes a day or a week)
Declutter one space every day – maybe that is one cabinet or one shelf
Get some help or inspiration by taking a course, having a professional come in and help you, or searching for decluttering methods online
Don’t overthink it, just do it

Whether your method is fast and furious or you take it slow and steady doesn’t really matter. There are courses and professionals out there that help you dig deep and get it all done in a decent amount of time. Different methods are out there like the challenge I did doing thirty minutes every day. Other methods set out to take a year to declutter your home by doing one small space per day. Whatever method you choose, the goal is to START.
I am not finished with my entire home yet, but I can tell you, the difference it has made in my home and my family already is amazing. You want to try this for yourself, I promise. What are some methods you have used when decluttering your home ? I would love to hear about them in the comments!

I need to declutter! It’s a good tip to start in a room with things with no sentimental value like the kitchen.
Yes, or the bathroom or linen closet is a good one.
